How to Kickstart your 2019 Job Hunt

You made the decision.

This year you will start looking for a new job. But is already the second week of January, and you haven’t done anything about it. It is not easy. Working all day, chores in the afternoon, and trying to get at least one hour of rest before going to bed if you’re lucky. You can’t seem to find the time to focus on your job hunt.

It is partially correct when people say that ‘starting is the hardest part.’ You’ll eventually have to do it, so why not start now with the following tips on how to kickstart your 2019 job hunt.

1. Google Yourself

Whatever your thoughts are on the subject, most employers these days will search your name to find out more about you and your internet presence. So, before applying to any job, it is always a good idea to make sure that what shows up on search engines and social media paints an accurate picture of who you are today.

Start by switching your internet browser to incognito or private mode. That way results are not skewed by your previous search history or location. Then, type your name (variations of, usernames, etc.) and confirm there is nothing there that might hurt your chances of obtaining an interview or a job. If there is, proceed to delete accounts, pictures, and posts that might not settle well with employers.

2. Start Narrowing Down Your Options

I’m a firm believer in that quality trumps quantity. It is better if you focus your job search to a few places first and then move on to different ones if it doesn’t work out. This way you can send thoughtful and complete applications that will increase your chances of getting hired.

Now it’s a good time to start making a shortlist of companies and places you are interested in working for. Write down why you want to work there. It might be useful when you get called for an interview, or when debating what job offer to accept.

3. Update Your LinkedIn Profile

How to optimize your LinkedIn profile is an article on itself. So, for now, I’ll recommend you do a web search and read more about what makes a LinkedIn profile a great one. There are also brilliant people who are experts on the matter, and who can help you set up an excellent LinkedIn profile.

Search by the term ‘LinkedIn Profile Writer,’ and don’t forget to ask for examples of their past work before hiring someone.

4. Make Time For Your Job Hunt

“We all have the same 24 hours in a day…” is a phrase I’m conflicted about because it doesn’t account for hundreds of different situations. However, the basic premise of it is true. There are only 24 hours in a day, and we need to separate some time to focus on our goals. If we don’t, no one else will.

Don’t say “I will dedicate one hour a day to my job hunt.” Instead, set up an alarm, and make it a routine. Wake up half an hour earlier every day to work on your resume, or separate an hour before going to bed to fill job applications. Whatever works for you, but make some time.

Good luck, and remember, here in WD Gigs we believe in you!
